Ad metric formulas
| Metric | Meaning | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | Cost per 1,000 impressions | cost ÷ impressions × 1,000 |
| CPC | Cost per click | cost ÷ clicks |
| CTR | Click-through rate | clicks ÷ impressions × 100 |
| CPA | Cost per acquisition | cost ÷ conversions |
| Conversion rate | Share of clicks that convert | conversions ÷ clicks × 100 |
Example: you spend $500 and get 200,000 impressions, 4,000 clicks and 80 sales. CPM is $2.50, CTR is 2%, CPC is $0.125, CPA is $6.25 and the conversion rate is 2%.
How the metrics connect
These numbers are three views of the same campaign, so one can be worked out from the others:
With a $2.50 CPM and a 2% CTR, the cost per click is 2.50 ÷ 20 = $0.125. This is why a cheap CPM does not guarantee cheap clicks: if nobody clicks, the cost per click climbs no matter how low the CPM is.
Which metric should you watch?
| Goal | Main metric | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Brand awareness | CPM | You are paying to be seen as cheaply as possible. |
| Website traffic | CPC and CTR | You are paying for visits, and CTR shows whether the ad is relevant. |
| Sales or sign-ups | CPA | Only the cost of a result tells you whether the campaign is profitable. |
Planning a budget
Use the "Budget to impressions" tab to see how far a budget goes. A $1,000 budget at a $2.50 CPM buys 400,000 impressions, and at a 2% CTR that is about 8,000 clicks. CPM varies widely by platform, country, audience and season, so use figures from your own ad account where you can. For creator-side numbers, see the YouTube money calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate CPM?
Divide the total cost by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. Spending $500 for 200,000 impressions gives a CPM of $2.50.
What is the difference between CPM and CPC?
CPM is the cost of 1,000 impressions, so you pay for views. CPC is the cost of one click, so you pay for visits. CPC equals CPM divided by CTR times 10.
What is a good CTR?
It depends on the platform and placement. Search ads usually see higher click-through rates than display or social feed ads. Compare against your own past campaigns rather than a universal figure.
How many impressions will my budget buy?
Divide the budget by the CPM and multiply by 1,000. A $1,000 budget at a $2.50 CPM buys 400,000 impressions.
