How to calculate engagement rate
Engagement rate tells you what share of an audience actually interacts with a post. Add up the interactions, divide by the audience size and multiply by 100.
Example: a post with 450 likes, 30 comments, 12 shares and 8 saves has 500 interactions. On an account with 10,000 followers that is 500 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 5%.
Three ways to measure it
| Method | Formula | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| By followers | interactions ÷ followers | Comparing accounts, influencer vetting, media kits |
| By reach | interactions ÷ accounts reached | Judging how good a single post was for the people who saw it |
| By views | interactions ÷ views | TikTok, Reels and YouTube videos, where views matter more than followers |
The three numbers are not interchangeable. Reach is usually smaller than your follower count, so the same post shows a higher rate by reach than by followers. Always say which method you used.
What is a good engagement rate?
There is no single official benchmark, and averages shift every year. As a rough rule of thumb for the follower-based rate:
| Rate (by followers) | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Under 1% | Low. Common on very large accounts and on accounts with inactive followers. |
| 1% to 3.5% | Average for most established accounts. |
| 3.5% to 6% | High. The audience is clearly paying attention. |
| Above 6% | Very high. Typical for small, tight communities or a post that went viral. |
Smaller accounts usually score higher than large ones, and TikTok rates tend to run above Instagram rates. Compare yourself with accounts of a similar size on the same platform.
How to improve your engagement rate
Post when your audience is online, open with a strong first second or first line, ask a question people can answer in a few words, and reply to comments quickly. Early interaction matters most: posts that collect likes and comments in the first hour are shown to more people.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate engagement rate on Instagram?
Add the likes, comments, shares and saves on a post, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For an account average, use the average interactions per post across your last 10 to 12 posts.
What is a good engagement rate?
As a rough guide, 1% to 3.5% by followers is average, 3.5% to 6% is high and anything above 6% is very high. Small accounts usually score higher than large ones.
Should I calculate engagement by followers or by reach?
Use followers when you compare accounts or build a media kit. Use reach when you want to know how well one post performed among the people who actually saw it.
How is TikTok engagement rate calculated?
On TikTok it is common to divide likes, comments and shares by video views instead of followers, because most views come from the For You page rather than from followers.
